Flowster is a speech-driven platform that runs entirely on your hardware, hosting a suite of configurable applications called Apparitions. Each Apparition is built for a different role in your personal or professional life — creative, therapeutic, productive, social, archival, journalistic, romantic, professional... Below are the core concepts that define how it works.
Vocal User Interface (VUI)
Similar to a Graphical User Interface, but uses voice commands to interact instead of mouse and keyboard. Both a GUI and VUI have a context, nested focus, and a position.
Virtual Intelligence (VI)
An interface-focused system that simulates conversational intelligence, embracing collaboration with the user. VI strives to complete tasks as if a human assistant were doing it, adopting proactive responsibility, and taking ownership of imperfections. VI builds on AI technology but reorients it fundamentally toward human partnership over autonomy.
Apparition
An application that implements specific VUI conversational behavior through prompt engineering. Apparitions may utilize Appliances (functional tools) to complete tasks. The prompts define the Apparition's response style, level of initiative, and approach to turn-taking and closure in a conversation. Examples: The Assistant (reactive), The Journalist (inquisitive), The Muse (exploratory).
Appliance
A functional tool or agent that an Apparition can invoke to perform specific tasks. Examples: Email Appliance, Local Storage Appliance, Image Generation Appliance, Screenplay Template Appliance.
Flowster
A configurable workflow platform that enables the creation of VUIs through flexible prompt-based workflows and conditional logic. Flowster supports multiple input/output modalities (speech, handwriting, images, phone, email, text, more), making it effective for implementing conversational voice interfaces that users can access while working, driving, or in the field.

Flowster exists to establish user sovereignty over the emerging technologies which are reshaping human cognition and communication. These technologies include artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomous agents, and voice-driven interfaces.
From that sovereignty, three principles follow: the right to privacy, the right to ownership, and the transparency that makes both possible. Flowster facilitates these principles without mandating them, placing the decisions of how to run them at the user's discretion, whether offline or connected, public or private, owned, shared, or leased.
In order to facilitate privacy, Flowster has the ability to operate entirely offline by default. Conversations are stored encrypted on the user's local device. No data leaves the device without the user's explicit action. The user has the right to decide what precise data may be divulged, and to what degree, whether publicly or within a subset of other users. The user has the right to decide the means and media by which data is shared, whether over an internet connection, by USB drive, printed-and-scanned, or some other means of transferring data.
Flowster and the Flowster Framework are licensed under APEX - the Anti-Predatory Ethics Exchange. The user owns the software they purchase, including the right to repair, the right to modify, and the right to freely disseminate it to other users. Products under the APEX license must offer a one-time perpetual license at a fixed price, though they may additionally offer a free tier and/or a subscription. The codebase of the Flowster Framework is open source and auditable by anyone. Terms of service are easy to understand and do not change without notice. Components built on the Flowster Framework - including the VUI system, Apparitions, and Appliances - may be proprietary or closed source at the discretion of their creators, whether free or paid.
Products released under the APEX license must clearly disclose their use, cost, duration, and data practices with no hidden terms, fees, or conditions. Specific requirements include:
Below are principles which emerge due to the specific nature of artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomous agents, and voice-driven interfaces.
Instrumentality and Consent of Execution - Apparitions, agents, appliances and all autonomous processes are tools. They serve the user and act only upon the user's explicit authorization. They do not initiate themselves, act on their own behalf, accumulate their own goals, or operate outside the scope of explicit user instruction unless the user authorizes such processes. The user defines the scope of execution, including restrictions, duration, repetition, frequency, and termination conditions.
Agentic Recursion - Autonomous agents have the capacity to spawn further agents and tasks indefinitely. Flowster acknowledges this capacity and places its governance entirely in the hands of the user. No recursive process runs without user authorization.
Threat Transparency - Every technology and process carries a security vulnerability. The user has the right to know what the known possible vulnerabilities of a software are, and to make informed decisions accordingly. Software under the APEX license must disclose a Vulnerability Level for its normal use, and for each use case or configuration.
When we first started out, we were simply developing to get ahead of the agent hype. We were making a platform that could spin up agents.
But while we were playing the long game, several agentic solutions were already gaining traction. So we shifted focus to business solutions and moved our original goals to the back burner.
Then the internet was hit with a few VUI-based offerings. These were basically chatbots that had a small context but were conversational enough to spark a new vision in us. Basically we saw everyone having their own personal Jarvis. But that Vision being another long game, we stuck mostly with what paid the bills and used our free time to explore VUI-driven AI assistants.
As we developed the technology further and started showcasing to some of our customers, many of them expressed wanting a VUI solution. They wanted to be able to phone in from their cars, their gyms - and sometimes from a literal field - and have a conversation. Everything we had worked on came full-circle into a neat little package. But by that time, there was a new villain.
While we were naively planning on reinventing the world of technology, others were weaponizing AI with the aim of more accurately steering the thoughts of the general public, for the goals of governance and of consumerism. Even though we wanted to live in peace and consider ourselves amateur conspiracy theorists over beers, it was growing apparent that the perceived conspiring was no longer theoretical.
Once we had validation, we knew that privacy was central to our mission. Not the privacy of the old ways where you store your information on the cloud and hope that it's private, or you get an apology letter if your data is breached. Not that type of privacy. A new type of privacy for a new era.
We mean secrecy. Absolute 100% AirGapped digital secrecy. Because the freedom to speak our opinion, or defend the people we love, or get together with them, and all the freedoms that derive from these, cannot exist without guaranteed privacy. And the fractures in our society and in our minds cannot heal without secrecy.
We started off just wanting to get ahead of the agentic hype. But we ended up in a position to do something a lot more weighty. This is our mission.
Flowster does not track, profile, or sell user data. We do not use advertising cookies, behavioral analytics, or third-party data collectors.
When you sign up for our newsletter, we store your email address for the sole purpose of sending you the newsletter. Newsletter delivery is handled by a third-party email service provider, who stores subscriber email addresses on our behalf. We do not use open tracking or click tracking. You may unsubscribe at any time and your address will be permanently deleted.
When you purchase Flowster, your payment is processed by a third-party payment processor. We retain the transaction record for tax and accounting purposes, which includes your name, email address, purchase amount, and date. Purchase records are retained for legal compliance and cannot be deleted on request.
Once Flowster is installed on your hardware, all conversations, data, and activity remain on your device. Flowster does not transmit, log, or access any of it. We have no technical means to do so, by design.
Third-party software made for the Flowster framework may have its own privacy policy.

1. Acceptance. By downloading, installing, or purchasing Flowster, you agree to these terms.
2. License. Flowster is licensed under APEX - the Anti-Predatory Ethics Exchange. Upon purchase, you are granted a perpetual, non-expiring license to use, modify, and distribute the software. The license does not change after purchase. See the APEX license for full details.
3. Ownership. You own the software you purchase. You own all data generated by your use of it. Flowster makes no claim to and accepts no liability for your data, conversations, or output. As the owner, you are solely responsible and liable for the security of your hardware and the data stored on it.
4. Payment. Flowster is available under a free tier, a monthly license, and a one-time perpetual license. All purchases are final. Refunds are not offered except where required by law.
5. Third Parties. Apparitions, Appliances, and other software built on the Flowster framework are the property of their respective creators and may carry their own terms of service.
6. Disclaimer. Flowster and its Apparitions do not provide medical, legal, financial, or therapeutic advice. Content generated by Flowster is for personal use only and cannot be relied upon as a substitute for professional consultation.
7. Warranty. Flowster is provided as-is. We make no warranties, express or implied, regarding fitness for a particular purpose or uninterrupted operation.
8. Liability. Flowster's liability is limited to the amount you paid for the software. We are not liable for data loss, indirect damages, or consequential damages of any kind.
